With over fifteen years of unparalleled expertise in the field of anesthesia, Dr. Irene Adorkor Wulff is a seasoned specialist and a trailblazer in her domain. As the Chief of Anesthesia at FOCOS she brings a wealth of knowledge and leadership to our esteemed institution.
A product of Achimota School in Accra, Ghana, Dr. Wulff graduated from the University of Ghana Medical School in 1997. She obtained a diploma in anesthesia in 2001 and completed her residency at the Korle-bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH), earning fellowship status with the West African College of Surgeons (WACS) in 2006.
During her 18-year tenure at the Department of Anesthesia, KBTH, Dr. Wulff played a pivotal role in numerous high-level and intricate surgeries, showcasing her vibrancy and dynamism. Her areas of expertise included anesthesia for neurosurgery, active involvement in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), and leadership roles in critical anesthetic incidents.
Joining FOCOS in 2014, Dr. Wulff assumed the role of Chief of Anesthesia, organizing and overseeing anesthesia for surgeries, managing the ICU, and leading perioperative services. Her meticulous approach to preoperative preparation, intraoperative management, and postoperative care has influenced the successful outcome of over 2000 complex spine and orthopedic procedures.
Dr. Wulff's proficiency extends to being the foremost expert in the nation, and arguably in the West Africa sub-region, in administering Total Intravenous Anesthesia (TIVA) for intraoperative neuro-monitoring in major spine deformity reconstruction. Her professional interests encompass intensive care, blood conservation, post-operative pain management, and resident education and training.
A Fellow with the West African and Ghana Colleges of Surgeons (WACS and GCPS), Dr. Wulff assumed the role of CEO of FOCOS Hospital in 2020, further solidifying her commitment to advancing orthopedic care and patient outcomes.
